Summary

The problems conected with the formation and development of the settlement systems are topical for the economic geography. The settlement systems form on a definite stage of the development of the productive forces and change in conformity with the demands of the society. The greatest significance for their formation and development have the economic factors. The towns are the basical huclea for the formation and development of the settlement systems. The territorial concentration of the production has lead to the development of aglomeration processes around the big touns, but of quite new qualitative nature. They lead to the formation of settlement systems around them, which are completely developed and can be ruled over. A good example of this sort is Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv settlement system.

The functions of the separate settlement systems of different kind and field are various. The planning and administration body has to approach carefully when solving the settlement economic problems, having in mind that this should be based on preliminary complex studies.
