MORPHOSTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOMINAKLISURA THRESHOLD

The Mominaklisura threshold is the linking morphostructural step between the Rilo-Rhodopes block and the Srednagora range. In process of studying its morphostructures, deposits and correlative surface forms two stages were clearly distinguished in its development: Neogenic and Quaternary.

During the first stage positive and negative structures developed in the region of the Mominaklisura threshold. The Dolnabanya and Sestrimo grabens, separated from the Trifonov and Belovo horsts, are located here. An abrasive level formation around the grabens, which penetrates deep into the Rila, Rhodope and Sredna gora mountains in the form of morphological corridor: along the river Valleys, has been done parallel to the graben filling with deposits.

During the next Quaternary stage two Lom-Quaternary levels and seven flood terraces have been formed in the region of Mominaklisura threshold by the Maritsa river and its feeders. In general the threshold uplifts to 250 m during that period. As a result a mountainfoot morphostructural step was formed which today is observed along the periphery of the Rhodope, Rila and Pirin mountains. This mountainfoot morphostructural step consists of successive grabens, filled with Neogenic sediments, and of transverse blocks (thresholds) dividing the grabens in which the Quaternary rivers develop epigenetic gorges.
