Summary
“The publication process in scientific research” is a book for new beginners to the world of international scientific publishing. It covers the basics of the publication process in periodical journals and underlines the importance of a well-organized and documented scientific research for successfully published papers. The book is structured into two main parts.
Part one presents the foundations of four primary stages of the publication process while explaining the meaning behind number of terms from English to Bulgarian, and providing practical tips and examples from the author’s professional experience. What operations fall within the preparation of a manuscript, editorial process, publication and dissemination of scientific papers are empirically explained and supported with relevant sources from the literature. This part of the book ends with unveiling several myths and deceptive information that still spread among the Bulgarian scientific community, and somehow to the authors’ knowledge, challenge the free development and integrity of science.
Part two explores the relationships between the publication process and the process of scientific research. The nine steps that every original research study must go through are interpreted through the lens of the process of developing an original scientific article. Defining the central question, observing, formulating a basic hypothesis, preparations, experiments, analysis, interpretations and drawing conclusions, publishing, and validations—all these nine steps are methodologically guided and explained. Each step is supported with the author’s examples from an original study presenting information about the working process and the published paper, which proves the linkages between well-organized research and publications.
The book aims to support the efforts for higher quality and visibility of the Bulgarian science on the international audience following the objectives drawn in the National strategy for the development of scientific research in the Republic of Bulgaria (2017 – 2030), the Development strategy of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2018 – 2030), and the Mission of the Bulgarian Geographical Society for intensive development of Geography by 2030.
“The publication process in scientific research” is the first book of a small book series titled: “How to write and successfully publish scientific papers: Tips from the editor” with lead author Dr. Hristina Prodanova, Managing Editor of the Journal of the Bulgarian Geographical Society.
Why to read this book
Academic researchers have long lived by the admonition “publish or perish” as if an essential truth is somehow captured by the Hobbesian dichotomy. But what does “publish or perish” really mean? Many early career and perhaps even experienced academics seem confused about what they should be aiming to publish and how publications should be structured. In How to Write and Publish Successful Research Papers Dr Hristina Prodanova seeks to challenge this grim Hobbesianism with a pragmatic approach to scientific publication written especially for those new to the game.
Those wanting to better appreciate the changing nature of scientific publishing could not ask for a better guide. Her approach is informed by her experience as an editor and as a scholar of the scientific publishing process and is refreshing free of dichotomous thinking and stuffy cant as she goes about the business of “myth-busting”. For example Prodanova notes that in a world where multi-authored scientific publications are becoming the norm it is important to be clear about what it means to be named as a co-author, and when it might be better to aim for sole-authored publications. Prodanova systematically identifies and busts myth before turning to “top tips” for aspiring scientific writers. Scholars seeking to raise their standard of scientific writing could not be in better hands.
