Transport geographical problems of Burgas seaport
Evgenia Djarova
Summary
The seaport towns are given considerable importance in the foreign trade o our country. The town of Burgas was formed as one of the largest transport junctions in Bulgaria, while the harbour itself provides the most direct transport connection with South and West-South Bulgaria. A lot of military and political operations as well as different tariff policies have influenced the seaport hinterland and its loading capacity. Data, published in the article, are generalized for a period of few years. Some goods account for a high relative share of the total cargo, carried by railway and motor transport means. They are directed to or received mainly from the metallurgic works of Kremikovtsi, chemical plants in the towns of Dimitrovgrad, Kardjali, Plovdiv and others. These data contribute to regionalize the loads.
Imported by the seaport of Burgas goods show a steadily increase in number and after the year of 1971 they were four times as much as the exported ones which is an unfavourable consequence because thus all kinds of transport means (ships, goods waggons and lorries) do not work in full capacity in their two-way route. Generally speaking, raw materials and manufactured products (liquid fuel, coals, ores and concentrates, metals, apatites, machines and appliances, fertilizers, etc.) are the main goods, imported through the seaport of Burgas. On the other hand, it is our chief exporter of metals, rolled iron, agricultural output, etc.
The seaport of Burgas relies very much in the process of its work on the railway and motor transport (92% of the imported and 81% of the exported goods are orientated to the railway lines).
To expand the harbour is a problem of paramount importance. Its settling will guarantee much more ship berths, will enlarge the harbour’s depot and improve the additional transport operations there. It is expected most of the enterprises, supplying or receiving goods, to build up their own storehouses. Attention should be paid also to the transport promptness, to the regular freighting and to more effective transport activities in view of loading and unloading the ships so as to minimize the demmurage.
