PREMISES FOR THE ECONOMIC ACTIVATION OF THE BULGARIAN NORTH WESTERN TERRITORY NEAR THE YOUGOSLAV FRONTIER (social and economic premises: industry, agricuiture, transport, tourism and resorts)

On the basis of our earlier study (published in “Izvestiya na BGD”, book XIV/XXIV), as well as of this one, we consider that the natural geographic and social-economic premises of the area under consideration have not been used to the best advantage yet. The main reasons for this are: the comparatively low degree in the development of the productive forces and the peripheral situation of the territory. That is why, it is possible in the future to concentrate the productive forces in Belogradchik, Kula, Chiprovtsi, and Bregovo — and, on the basis of such a concentration to increase the daily labour — migrations and improve the transport, tourism and the resorts.

The social, economic, and natural geographic premises considered in this paper can ensure the increase of the economic potentialities of the said territory in comparison with 1972 as follows: by 1980 — the increase will be 150%, and by 1990 — it will be 200%. It is necessary to direct the specializat ion of the territory towards the accelerated development of the labour-consuming branches of the industry and agriculture: machine—building, tailoring, animal breeding, fruit-growing, etc. There are additional possibilities for the employment of the population by establishing and developing tourist and resourt centres of national and international importance.

Thus, by means only of rational and highly effective development of the productive forces, it is possible to create an optimum living environment and a proportionate development of the systems of labour, living and recreation in the Bulgarian north-western territory situated along the frontier with Yougoslavia.
